Teaching Through a Pandemic

Teaching Through a Pandemic

The past 14 months have been extremely challenging for educators across the country. In Highline, our teachers showed incredible innovation and perseverance as they transitioned to distance learning and then hybrid learning, finding new ways to engage students and families.

We checked in with our Outstanding Teacher of the Year Kristin Wesp and Outstanding Rookie Teacher of the Year Gami Diaz Lizama to see what they have learned while teaching through a pandemic.

As an Integrated Learning Center (ILC) teacher at Mount Rainier High School, Ms. Wesp started in-person teaching last November. Mr. Diaz is a first-grade dual language teacher at Hazel Valley Elementary School. He transition to in-person teaching in March.

Both teachers say this year has challenged them in new ways as educators. They have poured their hearts and souls into their students and families. See what it's like teaching during a pandemic, and hear what they have to say about Highline teachers.

Note: Teachers and students in our ILC program may need to be closer than six feet apart to support students' special needs. To minimize the spread of COVID, we offer these teachers and staff personal protective equipment (PPE) such as disposable gowns, face shields, masks and gloves, and they were given first priority at our district vaccination clinic. Learn more about our school safety plans.
